The Scott Expedition
Web Design & Development
In 2013, British adventurers Ben Saunders and Tarka L’Herpiniere set out to complete Captain Scott’s iconic 1,795 mile Terra Nova route from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again. We were commissioned to help tell the story of this extraordinary journey and produce the official website for the expedition. Using satellite tracking technology we were able to share their progress precisely, and by coding a super lightweight system for posting to the site from Antarctica, there were daily reports and stories sent directly from the field.
Due to the way most flat maps of the world are displayed, Antarctica is usually distorted being right on the very edge. The same was true for most digital mapping services, such as Google Maps, yet we wanted a way to precisely position markers on a detailed view of the area the second we received the data. Without an existing service fit for purpose we developed our own method of automatically tracking the journey in real time using satellite imagery.
